Choosing The Best Domain Name

Cheap Group Domains Search

If you plan to register a Domain Name and build a Website to earn cash from it, then you may want to read this for sure. The first part of making a Website is choosing the Domain Name you will go with: if your domain name is somehow “poor”, you will most likely get very low traffic (visitors) to your site. Here you will get some basic information and advice about how to choose the right domain name for your business…

Cheap Group Domains Registration
Using Common Domain Endings

This can be good or bad for you. Common domain endings (CDE) means using domain endings such as: www xyzpal com or www xyztube com or something like that, where xyz is a word or a few words related to your niche. Here are some examples:

xyztube.com

xyzpal.com

xyzwire.com

xyzbay.com

xyzspace.com

and many more…

Downsides:

Your visitors will remember the original site. For example, lets say you have designed a video streaming site, and you choose to name it xyztube.com, then people will remember youtube, and simply go to youtube instead. I.e. dailymotion.com was smart choice, that is a good domain name and it has no relevance to youtube, because you don’t want to remind your traffic who your competition is. By choosing a name that ends with “tube”, you are indeed advertising YouTube.

Your visitors will also think that your site is a clone site that is nothing more than a “wanna-be.” That is bad for your site’s reputation. If your site happens to be better than the competition, let’s take the YouTube example, your might get sued for Copyright Infringement. Too much work and effort for nothing. Don’t choose a domain that is so much of a “carbon copy”.

Upsides:

If your copying isn’t that bad, then you will take a shortcut to front pages, easily become popular and get hight traffic, because it makes it easy for your visitors to remember the domain name that you have chosen.

Take LimeWire for example, a quite popular site and application. If you registar a domain names such as spankwire.com, then you can build a XXX website, and there you have it, two famous and really easy to remember site names. Spankwire copied the whole “wire” DME and still were able to become popular.

Searching a domain name
Search Keywords as part of your Domain Name.

Many people think that having keywords as part of a domain name is the best option to get top positions in search engines, but it doesn’t work for all domains names.

Upsides:

Using Keywords will make it really easy to have a good PR (Page Rank) and come up high in the list of the first page of search engines. That could never be bad in any way.

Keywords also help your visitors remember you WebSite name. If you are looking for a domain cheap deal , then guess what: you may end up going to domaincheapdeal.com…

Downsides:

Keywords often end up making a site’s domain name really long. Eight is a good number of characters to have in your domain, at max. However, as we see with domaincheapdeal.com, the domain name exceeds 8 characters. Because of this, visitors may choose other sites that have the same niche but different and smaller domain names, like domains.com, for example (unfortunately this domain name is already registered).

Keywords also seem to make site’s dull. For example, when you want to search for something regardless of where you usually search, you definitly don’t go to search.com do you? Or in other examples, if your searching for a proxy to use, you don’t just go to proxy.com, as its probably filtered on the PC anyways.

A common mistake when picking a domain with keywords is registering those that have keywords with dashes: www xxx-yyy-zzz com with xxx, yyy, and zzz being three different keywords with -‘s in between (i.e domains-hot-deals-com). These kinds of sites show up quick in search engines, but again, no one is going too type that s..t in, people will choose a site with a smaller name in the same niche.

Domain Name Extensions (Top Level Domains, Country Code Top Level Domains)

TLD stands for top level domain. The gTLD is a generic top level domain, which are domain names ending with a .info, .org, .net, etc. A ccTLD is a country code top level domain, which are domain names ending with a .in (India), .us (USA), .it (ITALY), etc.

Choosing a gTLD is best, but one can never say when it is best. This is a very complicated part of choosing a domain name, so please consider the following: Dot info If your website will be all about information is the best choice. If you are designing a website that provides information on how to build a website, then you may go with www creatingwebsites info, which completely makes sense. A .info domain name is often associated with proxy sites as well.

Dot com Do you think that there’ s no way of going wrong with a .com domain name? You know what? There is. Often people choose .com domain names that are really lengthy because thats all what’s left available and not registered with .com’s: long domain names. Don’t choose a domain name with more than 8 letters unless it really works well.

Dot net This is often a second choice if the domain name you want is not available with .com. However you have to be careful. Remember, you dont want a domain name that will remind people of other more famous websites, especially if you share the same niche. So lets say youtube.net is available, and you want to make a site like YouTube, then you would be making a huge mistake, because why would visitors go to youtube.net when they can just go to youtube.com ?

Dot org This is the best TLD for Websites that belong to Organizations, but again, dont make the same mistake as mentioned for .net .

Dot ccTLD Choosing a kind of country code TLD does not mean a lot. It is many times used in Cybersquatting (Cybersquatting, also known as domain squatting, according to the United States federal law known as the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, is registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The cybersquatter then offers to sell the domain to the person or company who owns a trademark contained within the name at an inflated price. However, there are very popular ccTLD’s registered: good examples are del.icio.us and www  wis dm. Both use the TLD at the end to make a word. This also allows visitors to easlily remember domain names. ccTLD’s can be more expensive than traditional TLD’s.

It was 2006 and the internet landscape looked completely different, much simpler.
Just eight years ago, if you wanted to register a domain name to run your business, a personal blog, an online store, a social profile, or reserve a name for future purposes, you just needed to focus in the domain name and follow some basic tips regarding the name length, the use of dashes and numbers and avoid copyright violations to get a domain name easy to remember and “brandable”. Today with over 1000 (one thousand) new generic top level domain extensions released for registrations, things have changed…

New gTLDs: Upsides and Downsides today

The New gTLDs are here whether you like it or not

Search New Generic Top Level Domains

As we mentioned in a previous post, over one thousand new gTLDs are in the process of being launched during this year and 2015. The yearly fees for registration of these new extensions start at two times the cost of registering a Dot Com domain extension or higher.

In addition if you want to pre-register a new gTLD you can do it now, but in most cases if there’s more than one bidder for the name of your choice you will be taken to a private auction between all the bidders, it’s not a first come first served pre-reg. So you may end up paying more than what you expected for the registration and sometimes it’s not clear how much will you have to pay for renewals of this “premium-wannabe” name.

My two cents on new domain extensions

First all let us give you a big picture on new GTLDs. There are currently over 1500 new domain extensions available for registration or pre-registration with yearly fees starting at two or three time the cost of registering a Dot Com domain extension…

New Domain Extensions - Cheap Group Domains

The total number of registered domain names passed 250 million in the last quarter of 2012, and more than 6 million domain names were registered in the fourth quarter of 2012, bringing the total to 252 million worldwide. The basic dot com domains, make up the majority of registered domain names. By the end of December users had registered 106.2 million .com domains, as well as 14.9 million .net addresses. The .com and .net top-level domains (TLDs) also accounted for the majority of newly registered domain names. In total, 8 million .com and .net TLDs were registered during the fourth quarter of 2012. Additionally about 21 percent of .com and .net websites, are just one-page sites and 15 percent are registered but don’t point to a working site at all. Country code top-level domains grew 21.6 percent year-over-year to a total of 110.2 million domain names, with China driving quite a bit of this growth. (Source: Verisign).

What about new domain extensions? Well, according to Domain Incite, as of March 5, there were just over 200,000 domain names registered in the new gTLD extensions. ( this is around 0.08% of the total registered domains). Consider that an important amount of them where defensive registrations from Companies that run their business using the traditional dot com extension and some others that are registering for brand protection.

So, what about the idea that the new gTLDs will change the Internet forever? In the new internet era (with more than 1000 extensions), will shorter domains using new gTLD extensions become good brandable domains as well? And more importantly, will new domain extensions (assuming they run websites with relevant and fresh content) show up on top in search engines? These are some questions that still don´t have a concrete answer. And not having an answer at all, new gTLD’s should be considered a high risk investment.

We will start taking registrations for new domain extensions at Cheap Group Domains very soon (it´s almost all set), however we suggest you follow some of the following tips:

  • If you happen to find a single character domain name (or up to two or three letters) it might be a good asset in the future.
  • Same applies for single word names (non brandable) that are related to your business.
  •  If your domain name currently includes a word that equals the new domain extension, you can consider registering a shorter version of the domain name you are currently using. (example: if you own yourclub.com you might consider registering your.club)
  • Meanwhile there are still plenty of available dot com domains still waiting for your registration at a very convenient yearly price.

Good Luck!!
