If you’ve been active in social networks and now have plans to launch an online store, take a look at your own Social DNA before linking your name to your business.

Let´s say you’ve been pretty active last years and opened personal profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Stumbleupon, Tumblr, LinkedIn, personal blogs, etc.

 Search engines collect a sort of “track record” of your activities, tweets, posts and comments that will generally show up when you type in your name.
There´s nothing to object about your activities there, that’s your life and you’re free to do whatever you want with it. You may have been talking about movies, games, sex, politics, posted some party photos and shared any kind of stuff online year after year.
Then, all of a sudden you get the opportunity to start an online business that can change your future. You start searching of a killer business name, find a great domain name to run your online store and start making plans to launch it to the Internet Universe.
If you decide to link you name to your business (hello my friends…it´s me selling now selling this!), your own Social DNA will be related to your new Online Business at both will show up very close on search engines.
Then you should ask yourself these critical questions before launching:

  1.   My social activity can really help me grow my business?
  2. Will I sell to my contacts and friends as a first target?
  3. Do they care about the products and services that I will start selling?
  4. Or will I just start spamming them with my new offerings?
  5. Are they really interested in buying anything from me?
  6. Will any of my social interactions contradict the spirit of my business?
  7. Do I have plans to advertise on my new store? Reach other people?

If the answers to questions 1 to 5 is NO and 6/7 is YES then you probably need to follow a totally different approach. Try to be honest and sincere when considering the above questions.

Before launching your brand new online store:

  • Add private registration to your registered domain name (if you haven’t already done so.
  • Submit your website to Search Engines and Business Catalogs.
  • Get your own business email (i.e. [email protected])
  • Open new social profiles for your store at Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, Stumbleupon, etc.
  • A new related Twitter account.
  • A new related Blog to keep your customers up-to-date with your Store news.
  • An profile.
  • If you are on LinkedIn and your personal profile has the required level, you can open a Company page. I would live that as a second step, as this page will be related to your personal profile.
  • Issue Press Releases on your new business. Try to use a professional language but go simple. (There are some cool places such as PRLog where you can post your Press Release for free).
  • Once all of the above is setup and you are mapped on search engines then you can start planning on Paid Advertising. Don’t spend your marketing budget before you are ready.
  • Now you can spread the word to your friends.
